The last 20 years have seen the considerable changes of the Ukrainian market being the reflection of all the processes which have taken place in the country. Nowadays translation activity has become the full industry with its own standards and methods to communicate with the clients. So, modern translation market requires strengthening of its infrastructure and creating absolutely new, alternative models of service supply process, which should be included into methodological part of future translators/interpreters’ training.   • the agreement on double Master’s degree in Business Communication between Alfred Nobel University and Humanitas University in Sosnowiec, Poland.
  • cooperation agreement between Alfred Nobel University and the Institute for International Cooperation Development, Poznań.

The Department’s cooperation with employment sector was confirmed by successful industry and pre-diploma practice of undergraduate and postgraduate students. To ensure lifelong education, senior lecturer of the Department Larysa Ratomska attended the methodological seminar “Ukraine is a country of modern, safe and comfortable places for living, tourism and business” organized by the Department of Linguistics of the Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences and Dnipro Regional State Administration (2017).

To guarantee the academic mobility, teachers and students actively participate in:

  • Erasmus+ teaching mobility – Associate Professor Tamara Ishchenko – University of Occupational Safety Management in Katowice, Poland, February 2018, Valeria Kalinichenko – University of Occupational Safety Management in Katowice, Poland, April 2018.
  • Erasmus+ learning mobility – fall semester 2017-2018 – 1 student University of Occupational Safety Management in Katowice, Poland, Poland, spring semester 2017-2018 – 2 students University of Cadiz, Spain, University of Rzeszów, Poland.
  • 2 Master students are taking a 3-month internship at InText, Poland.

In March 2017 the European Projects Centre represented by Associate Professors – Tamara Ischenko and Olena Vasilenko took part in the project “Transformation and Educational Processes in the Visegrad Group countries” where they provided translation, documentation and support.

The study process implies the use of online technologies in teaching more than 60% disciplines, in particular, SpeechPool, Google Translate, Webtran, Quizlet; online dictionaries Lingvo, Multitran, e-libraries, virtual museums etc. Network IT such as Google Classroom are being integrated. Appraised is “Electronic Translator’s Portfolio”. All teachers use Moodle to ensure the independent work of students for subjects taught. Skype is used for the ongoing and, in some cases, final assessment of students who are taking learning mobility abroad. In 2017 the remote examination in English Theory and Practice was successfully passed by students who were taking learning mobility Erasmus+ at the University of Cadiz, Spain. The workshops, game teaching methods and problem-based learning are also implied.

In 2017 16 students took part in the international educational project and took B2 and C1 exam with the British Council at the HUMANITAS University, Poland.

In September 2017 5 students received double Bachelor’s degree in “Business English” in Higher School of Labour Safety Management in Katowice. In December 2017 3 Master’s students of the programme Philology received Master’s degree in “Business Communication”.

Since its founding in 1995, English Philology and Translation Department continually responded to the changing needs of its students and changes in the world at large. The Department is an integral part of the University – with our education you will be empowered to make a difference not just in your life, but in the lives of others. You will learn, grow, and have fun – all while preparing yourself for the future. English Philology and Translation Department is an excellent breeding ground for future translators / interpreters.

1995 – Foundation of English Philology and Translation department.

2004 – The first student conference “Youth of Ukraine in the context of cross-cultural communication”.

2007 Translation and interpreting contests and “the week of translator”.

2010 – Launching ofPhilological journal, a biannual scientific publication.

2012 – N.V. Zinukova, the head of the department, an Academic Visitor at the University of Cambridge, Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics.

2013 – Registration of“Ukrainian Translation Teachers Union”, a public organization by N.V. Zinukova and L. Chernovaty, DLett, Full Professor of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

January 2014 – the first internship in WSB NLU, Nowy Sacz, Poland.

2014 – The first 16 double diploma received at the Higher School of Management and Labour Protection in Katowice (the Republic of Poland).

In 2017-2018 academic year teachers of the department submitted their research papers to the repository of the University and were registered in Google Scholar. For 2017-18 academic year they published 2 monographs, 10 articles in foreign publications, 6 textbooks, 5 abstracts in the collections of materials for international and national research-to-practice conferences. The number of articles in specialized publications per teacher is 1,7. Participation in conferences per teacher is 1,9.

Academic seminars are held to discuss current results of academic work. Teachers of the Department took part in more than 25 methodological seminars, webinars and language courses for further training.

The department collaborates with training centres to improve professional level of teachers. Thus, in November 2017, the teaching staff of the department and the "Linguist" centre within the National Geographic Learning programme conducted a certified eight-hour workshop "Keynote. Critical Thinking" at Alfred Nobel University. The seminar was attended by all teachers of the department. Future cooperation is planned for further training of not only teachers but also Bachelor and Master students.

The percentage of teachers having the academic degree and academic status to the total number of teachers of the department is 63%.

Perspective directions:

1) Joint cooperation in the field of science with the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk (Poland);

2) Open lecturers of visiting professors.
