What is ECTS?

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) is a standard for assessment and comparing the performance of students of higher education across the European Union and other collaborating European countries. The ECTS was developed to facilitate student mobility, removing obstacles and improving recognition of degrees and academic qualification, as well as to make academic curricula more compatible and more comparable, more competitive and more attractive for Europeans and for students and scholars from other countries.

A credit system is based on different parameters, such as student workload, learning outcomes and contact hours. The ECTS is based on the principle that 60 credits measure the workload of a student during one academic year. Credits in ECTS can only be obtained after successful completion of the work required and appropriate assessment of the learning outcomes achieved. Learning outcomes are sets of competences expressing what the student will know, understand or be able to do after completion of a process of learning, long or short. Student workload in ECTS consists of the time required to complete all planned learning activities such as attending lectures, seminars, independent and private study, preparation of projects and examinations.

The ECTS is based on the mutual trust of the parties and implies observation of its rules concerning all its components: application of ECTS credits, assessment grading scale, study agreement, information packs.

The ECTS credits are numerical grade equivalents, which are allocated to all educational components of an academic curriculum (such as disciplines, modules, courses, placements, dissertation work, etc.) for outlining the students’ academic workload. They are used to determine work content and keep record of its accomplishment. The students assigned with the credits are those who have successfully finished the course and have been given a positive grade for the work fulfilled.
