Department of Global Economics

The Department of Global Economics is degree-granting for the specialities 292 "International Economic Relations" and 051 "Economics", and also teaches several courses that provide general economic training for other specialities.

The bachelor's and master's degree programmes in international economic relations and economics are nationally accredited, and they are accredited by the Central Evaluation and Accreditation Agency ZEvA, which confirms the high quality of training.

Since its establishment (1993) the Department is headed by Doctor of Economics, Full Professor, and Honoured Worker of Education of Ukraine Anatolii Zadoia. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. For over 45 years he has been teaching basic economics (economic theory, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and international economics) and special training courses (international investment activities, international financial relations, financial markets, international business, economic diplomacy) in higher education institutions of Ukraine and Poland. He has actively engaged in consulting activities. Prof. A Zadoia is the author of 30 textbooks and manuals that are widely popular in Ukraine and abroad. He has published more than 300 scientific papers. Under his supervision, 9 doctoral dissertations and several dozen candidate dissertations were defended. He is a member of two specialized scientific councils for the defence of doctoral dissertations; was a member of the National Agency for Quality Assurance in Higher Education of Ukraine (2015-2017).

The educational process in the courses of the Department is conducted by 21 teachers (13 of them are full-time employees of the department), including 8 doctors of sciences and 9 candidates of sciences.

The Department of Global Economics was one of the first to widespread the introduction of British standards in the educational process of conducting classes and assessing students' knowledge. Since 2010, the department has implemented an English-language programme that does not have any analogues in Ukraine, which in 2011 was validated by the University of Wales. This enabled graduates of this bachelor's programme to receive a British Diploma in international management. Now more than 80 graduates took advantage of this unique opportunity.

Since 2016, the department has provided a system of tutoring (mentoring), which helps each student to adapt to the specifics of studies at the University and build their own individual educational trajectory.

Total number of students

In total, almost 500 students are studying in the programmes of the Department (bachelor’s and master’s degree), of which more than 60 people are international students. Among the latter are representatives of Nigeria, Cameroon, Angola, Congo, Zimbabwe, Israel and other countries. Studying in multinational groups allows all students to better prepare for future professional activities in business and international economic relations.

Teaching methods

Highly qualified and experienced specialists work with students, including doctors and candidates of sciences. They are widely involved in the educational process.

The educational process is carried out according to the programmes that meet modern world standards, according to the latest methods, in classrooms with modern equipment.

Lecture courses in the disciplines of the curriculum are taught using multimedia equipment. At the request of students, each of them can receive an electronic version of the slides (reference slide synopsis). All teaching materials are posted on the Google Classroom platform and are freely available to students.

Seminars and practical classes are conducted using simulation methods of studying the discipline, case-study, discussion of student reports on themes of individual assignments.

Extensive opportunities to use a specialized library, reading rooms, Internet access in the computer classrooms of the University allow students to master the latest software products, which contribute to the training of highly qualified professionals.

The ongoing, modular and final assessment are carried out by computer testing.

Students have the opportunity to undertake internships at companies that are successfully engaged in business and international economic activity. Some students (based on competitive selection) can apply for an internship at one of the enterprises abroad (mainly the Republic of Poland and Bulgaria).

Upon completion of bachelor's and master's programmes, applicants for higher education defend the relevant qualifications. A high level of language training allows students to defend their Bachelor`s and Master`s theses in English.

Each year the Department hosts two International scientific and practical conferences of young scientists and students, dedicated to the European integration choice of Ukraine and the problems of macroeconomics.

Cooperation of the department with various organizations

The Department has close contacts with both domestic and foreign organizations involved in professional training in Economics and International Economic Relations.

Among them, there are the enterprises from Dnipro City, which are actively engaged in foreign economic activity or have a share of a foreign investor in their authorized capital. These are, in particular, Metal-Courier, Interpipe, CONCORD Bank, Dnipro Chamber of Commerce and Industry and others.

In September 2018, the first dual master's degree programme in International Economic Relations was launched. The partner of the University is Metal-Courier Company, with which a corresponding agreement has been concluded. Under this agreement, the students of the Master's programme study at the university in the first half of the day and work in the company in the second half, receiving the appropriate salary and practical skills in the analysis of world markets and drawing up reports.

Since 2011, the Department has been implementing a joint study project with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, in which students study in English from the first year, and after four years of study they receive British bachelor's degree.

In 2014, an agreement on double Master's degrees with the Bratislava University of Economics (Slovakia) came into force, the graduates of which receive in addition to the Ukrainian diploma a diploma from a foreign university in international economic relations - economic diplomacy.

The university and the department actively take part in international activities. The Department of Global Economics is one of the oldest at the University. It was established as the Department of Economic Theory in 1993 (the year of the University's founding). At that time, it combined the teaching of virtually all subjects taught to first-year students, except for a foreign language. Gradually, the functional responsibilities of the department were limited as new departments were created, which took over the teaching of special courses. Since 1996, the Department of Economic Theory provides basic economic training for students of economic and non-economic specialities of the University.

Since 2003, the department started training experts in International Economics, and therefore was renamed to the Department of International Economics and Economic Theory.

In 2010, the English-language Bachelor's programme in International Management, validated by the University of Wales, was launched. Thus, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical skills in both the courses of the speciality and English. To date, more than 90 graduates have completed the programme and received British Diploma.

In connection with the approval of a new list of specialities in 2016, the department began training Bachelors and Masters in International Economic Relations and was renamed to the Department of International Economic Relations and Economic Theory.

In 2020, the department began training of Bachelors, Masters and Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) in the speciality 051 "Economics" and was renamed to the Department of Global Economics.

During the years of its existence, the department has launched a significant number of initiatives, which today is the norm of the University. In particular, in 1994 a collection of tests on the basics of economics was published. The department was the first to publish reference slide summaries and began to use multimedia presentations on a large scale. The department was the first to initiate the English-language training of specialists and passed the appropriate validation procedure.

During the period of work at the Department, candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended by Sergii Kuzminov and Hanna Hlukha.

Candidate dissertations were also defended by former and current employees of the department, including:

Elvina Limonova (now Associate Professor of the Department);

Alisa Magdich (now professor of the Department);
